Prayer of the Church, 3rd Sunday of Advent, Year A
P: God of Reversals and New Life: We praise and thank you for the joyful vision that you gave your ancient prophet Isaiah. Nature reveals your glory and sings for joy whenever you restore it with new, abundant life. The weak and blind, the deaf and lame, the voiceless shall be healed and sing your praises. A highway for God’s redeemed people shall lead them to joyfully sing their way to Zion. God of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.
P: God of All Generations: With joy we celebrate your rule over all of creation and your saving grace to the oppressed and the hungry; those in prison and the blind; those bowed down and the righteous; strangers, orphans and widows. May we also care for and love those most vulnerable in our midst. God of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.
P: Most Patient God: In a fast-paced world of immediate gratifications, grant us patience and help us to learn from the ancient prophets and other people of faith who suffered and were patient by trusting in you at all times. God of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.
P: Jesus our Coming Messiah: We, like John, at times struggle with doubts and are tempted to look in the wrong places to wait for someone other than you. Forgive us, set us straight, and remind us of your saving work whenever: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. May we be blessed by not taking offense at you and, like John, during this Advent season, prepare to celebrate your coming. God of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.
P: God of Israel and the Gentile Nations: Grant wisdom and grace to Queen Elizabeth, and the leaders of all nations; that they may govern with justice and work for peace—especially today we pray for the governments and Christian Churches in: Israel and Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North and South Korea, Burma, Zimbabwe, and Sudan, as well as our nation, Canada. God of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.
(Additional petitions and thanksgivings may be offered here, ending with: of mercy: C: Come, and fill us with your joy.)
P: God of Mercy: With joy, humility and awe we appeal to you for your hearing of these and all other prayers that serve you and your holy purposes; through Jesus our Coming Messiah; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ALL: Amen.
